Pomegranates are deciduous bushes that can reach up to 5-8mts high. It has slip shiny leaves aproximately 3-7cm long and 2cm wide.  Flowers are about 3cm bright red, with five petals.

The gender name, Punica comes from the phoenicians who actively disperse its cultivation, partly for religious rehaznos. The specie name granatum comes from the latin granatus, that means “with grains”.

Pomegranate fruit is a round berry with a cork like bark, its interior is divided in several lobes that hold juicy pulp seeds. It will open spontaneous when it reaches maturity.

Native from the Middle East, probably Persia or India. It is highly appreciated in desertic zones, because it is protected from dehidratation by its thick cork skin.

Many towns have seen pomegranate as a symbol of love, fertility and prosperity.  According to Greek mythology the first pomegranate was planted by Afrodita, the goddess of love and beauty.
