From the cucurbit family, melons are herbaceus annual plants with a prostrate nature.

Melon flowers are lonely, yellow and there may by female, male or even hermaphrodite.  Polinization is entomophilous, meaning it needs to be assisted by insects.

CANTALOUPE MELON

Cantaloupe is consumed mostly fresh, in salads, desserts, etc. They are generally early fruits (85-95 days), cyclic and slightly flat with a weight of 700-1200grams. They have a marked net, fine skin and sweet aromatic orange flesh (11-15ºBrix). Once they are harvest, cantaloupe melons must be competely mature.

The optimun soluble solids to be harvest are between 12-14ºBrix. When maturity is reached the skin changes to yellow and the foliage turns green-dark gray.

Cantaloupe is a good poliphenols source, which are antioxidants, known for being highly benefic for the inmune  and cardiovascular system.

HONEYDEW MELON

Round fruit, slightly oval 15-22cm long. Honeydew melons flesh is pale green, dense, juicy and sweet.
This variety develops better in semi-arid conditions. Harvest is according to the fruit maturity, not their size, which can be hard to judge. It is identified by a color change in the fruti skin from a white-yellowish (immature) to a yellow-green (mature).

Honeydew skin must be smooth, or just straited, but free from ay scars with a waxy hair-free surface.
